ICL seeks mentors for emerging leaders
posted on July 7th, 2010
The ICL Young Emerging Leaders Pilot Program (seed funded by Norton Insurance and Financial), launching this September, will prepare for and then place young emerging leaders to successful nonprofit board and committee leadership roles in Maine. The program will feature a number of integrated components including: leadership development, mentoring, matching, transition and follow-up. We at ICL view the mentoring component as critical to the development of program participants and seek those who currently serve or who have served in the past on a nonprofit board or committee to serve as mentors.
ICL Young Emerging Leaders Pilot Program mentors are expected to commit between one and two hours per month to the development and support of their mentor/mentee relationship, though together, you and your mentee will negotiate mentor partnership agreements based on your mutual needs and styles. We view this as a reciprocal relationship, with both mentor and mentee benefiting through the sharing of leadership perspectives and approaches. Mentors must also attend (with their mentees) a mandatory ICL Young Emerging Leaders Pilot Program training session on mentor partnerships from 5 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, October 19.
If you are able to fulfill these commitments and are interested in becoming a mentor, we invite you to fill out this Mentor Questionnaire and return it to Laura Moorehead at ICL by July 23. Please note that submitting the questionnaire to us does not lock you into being a mentor. Based on the information you provide in this initial questionnaire as well as the answers to mentor/mentee-related questions on applications submitted by emerging leaders accepted to the program, ICL will match volunteer mentors with program participants later this summer.
We hope to receive your completed questionnaire and thank you in advance for your continued interest. If you have further questions about the mentoring component of this pilot program, please contact Laura Moorehead, ICL’s Director of Training, at lmoorehead@civicleadership.org or (207)773-3254 (ext. 104). And if you know of colleagues or friends who have board/committee service experience and may be interested in serving as a mentor, please encourage them to fill out the questionnaire and submit it to us as well.

In addition to the lead sponsorship provided by seed funder Norton Insurance and Financial and fellow lead sponsor Wright Express, the program is made possible thanks to generous support from Fairchild Semiconductor, the United Way of Greater Portland, the Maine Community Foundation, Camden National Bank, Maddy Corson and our partners including Unum, Rippleffect and the Portland Symphony Orchestra.
